In the 1800's Kansans would escape the hot and dusty plains of summer in Kansas by going to the shady forests of Ute Pass. Before long Easterners began to discover that Ute Pass was (and is) a pleasure spot like no other. Within four short years, three resort towns sprang up on Ute Pass to accommodate vacationers from all over. Cascade was the first of these, with Robert's Saloon offering libations to thirsty travelers as early as 1859. Among those enticed to call Cascade home was David Heizer, who formed the Cascade Town Company in 1886. The following year saw the emergence of Green Mountain Falls. Both Cascade and Green Mountain Falls continued developing throughout 1888. The Ramona Hotel in Cascade and the Green Mountain Falls Hotel rivaled each other in class and elegance. Saturday night dances took place regularly, entertained by elite orchestras. In at least one case, the Ramona's courtyard was illuminated by the headlights of the Colorado Midland Railroad engines. In about 1890, Chipita Park blossomed between the other two towns. Today Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls remain cool and peaceful, welcoming weary travelers to come rest a bit and enjoy the natural wonders Ute Pass continues to offer.
